Boone loves to take pictures and I’m hesitant to let him use my Nikon without constant supervision, so this Xmas he got the VTech Kidizoom preschool digital camera. You can take pictures, make videos and play games on this orange (therefore gender neutral), rubbery-bodied camera which is why I picked it over the Fisher Price Kid-Tough digital camera that only takes basic photos and comes in either pink or blue but is otherwise quite similar – including price point (around $60). It turns out that the additional features and the extra 6 buttons on the Kidizoom make it much more complex than need be.
The ad says it that it has “interchangeable faceplates for personalization”, which means you can choose between circles and squares (Boone picked squares) but then you have this extra faceplate that you either need to store or throw away. It has two viewfinders that are totally useless seeing as it’s not a Single Lens Reflex camera (meaning one must compensate for the distance between the viewfinders and lens – not an easy concept for a three-year-old to grasp) plus it has an LCD screen. It takes 4 AA batteries and an SD card (sold separately) that go in 2 separate compartments that require a screwdriver, the steady fingers of a surgeon and the patience of a saint to install. To top it off, it takes really cruddy photos and Boone just wants to bounce it down the stairs like the kids in the commercial – but he does seem to enjoy that.
