Art worth talking about

While in Ottawa for the Canadian Aquatic Invasive Species Network meeting I was able to get over to the National Gallery; one of my very favourite places. Though, I have been going for 15 years I still manage to get lost every time.

Ron Mueck, a sculptor from the UK (born in Australia) had a jam-packed show that was just amazing. He makes hyper-lifelike sculptures of humans and messes with their scale. Some are huge and fill the room while others are tiny and people were crowding the pedestals to get a closer look. Each have extraordinary attention of detail, from veins, capillaries, nails and toe hair to the facial expressions that make them even more lifelike. It's like being at a freak show or a zoo and viewer is reduced to a gawker. Like a duface, I didn't bring my camera but found a wee photo of Wild Man that is exactly like the photo I would have taken (only it was a lady in a red hat looking at the Wild Man's hand).

Additional photos of Ron Mueck's sculptures are
